Here is a selection of timelapse animations of the Aurora Australis (southern lights) taken from University of Canterbury Mt John Observatory, Lake Tekapo, New Zealand. Lake Tekapo is situated too far north to regularly observe an Aurora however, due to our exceptionally dark skies it is possible to see the upper reaches of the Aurora Australis even when it’s well beyond the horizon. In these cases, the Aurora will only appear as a faint, colourless glow close to the horizon and a camera is required to discern colour and detail. Once every few years when we have intense solar activity and very dark skies (no Moon) it can be possible to see the distinct red and green colours often associated with an Aurora. These are produced when oxygen atoms are excited by charged particles, produced by an emission from the sun.
